What gay men give to the world. A-yup.

On the second one.

There’s this one gay club I go to that actually has a problem of straight guys going there to dance with girls. I guess these guys don’t understand that girls can also be gay, because they assume that any girls at the club are there with their gay guy friends.

So one night I was out on the dance floor, and I see this guy. He’s like over six-foot, at least, all beefed-up, muscle shirt, looks kindof like a douchebag. And he’s just circling the dance floor, in one continuous loop, looking at the crowd like a predator, and it’s creeping me the fuck out.

It’s creeping me out enough that I don’t immediately realize what’s going on nearby. Some girl has attracted one of the Assholes, who has proceeded to begin grinding on her. She’s pushing him away, telling him to get lost. He’s pulling that whole, “come on, don’t be a bitch” spiel, and generally just not getting the message.

BAM. Suddenly, the prowling guy swoops in, like some sort of Gay Avenger. He shoves himself between the girl and the Asshole, grabs the Asshole by the hips, and starts dirty dancing him like a God-damned fuck machine. Asshole completely flips his shit, like how DARE another man try to dance with him at a GAY BAR???, starts spitting curses, and tears ass off the dance floor and out onto the sidewalk.

The Gay Avenger turns back to the girl, inclines his head in an, “are you okay?” sort of gesture. She nods, and he returns to his previous position of circling the dance floor, looking for his next target.

Told this story to some guys upstairs. Apparently Gay Avenger is a regular there.

How does Amanda do that thing where she just makes me feel better about everything and everyone simply by discussing her relationship with Neil? It’s not like “oh wow, perfect people, i’m such a fangirl because they’re so PERFECT” because that’s exactly it. They’re not! It is so goddamn refreshing to hear about them because they both have their issues, they have their arguments and their awkward places where they don’t fit together quite right. But ultimately they have a love that’s really powerful and resilient, and they figure out how to make those pieces fit anyway. I don’t love reading about them because of some kind of celebrity awe-inspired adoration I have for them. I love reading about them because they are great role models for another crazy, mixed up girl in love with a crazy, mixed up boy. -love fest over-

I was trying to find this quote recently. I don’t think most white people understand how it feels to be thought of as only as a dehumanized stereotype or a token. Never as someone like you who can be relatable and have things in common with you. It’s always a surprise to people online and offline when people find out that I like things that they do, too ; that I’m not just some angry activism-obsessed woman. When people like Lena Dunham say they don’t know how to write Black people, it’s pretty much saying that she doesn’t think that Black people are also fully complex human beings like her. Sure, there are cultural considerations to be made, but it’s ignoring the fact that people of color are diverse and not a monolith, so it’s not like the only girls who are like her are white.

If the “passing privilege” person is looking at this blog, this is one thing you can do, if you’re up to it.

This is fantastic. I feel like discussions of privilege in any context have a tendency to get either accusatory from one side or disproportionately guilty from the other, which can shut down discussion. I have noticed myself feeling reluctant to discuss my own privilege on many occasions because I tend to finish the conversation feeling guilty and like I want to shout at “society” “what did I do to deserve this that this other person did not? I don’t want it this way. Take some of my privilege, it’s high time someone else shared it!” But of course you can’t just give away your privilege. I like this way of viewing it: Privilege is a thing, but that doesn’t mean we can’t use it to make it less of a thing in the future. This is a good concrete example of how you can take that unfair advantage that “society” gave you and use it for good.

Now of course that’s not easy. But neither is being the person who is assumed to be lying, writing bad checks, attacking someone on the street, etc. But in this case, the hard part doesn’t just happen whether you want it to or not. We who are privileged members of society have to actively take responsibility, like this woman did at the Safeway.

think HARD about that: not only did they white-wash Katniss, they EXPLICITLY PROHIBITED WoC TO AUDITION FOR THE ROLE OF KATNISS. Smells like blatant racism.

Can we focus on that last part? B/c white people will always come up with “well the white actor/actress was just the best one to audtition.” Well, yeah if that’s ONLY who auditioned.

They’re theory of white actors/actresses being better doesn’t hold up if no one else if given the opportunity to even audition.
